We received some questions at the end of the webinar last week, so I decided to answer a few here, along with answers to other questions I received during the past few weeks. Don't forget that you can also get your SEO questions answered by using our newsletter question form.

Organic SEO or PPC? - If organic SEO is so important, why are we being sold on PPC as most important by PPC trainers? Why is there less about organic SEO?
| Which Is More Likely to Be Clicked? - Is someone more likely to click on my organic or paid search result if they appear side by side?
| | Penalized for Buying Links? - In Google's Webmaster Tools there is a section where you can submit someone you think is buying links. Here is what I don't understand – can Google really penalize you for purchasing links?
| Shutting Down a Site - I work for a nonprofit that since 2000 has been operating an e-commerce website to provide emerging artists with a web presence. It has earned a toolbar PageRank of 5, thanks to some decent inbound links. Due to a variety of things, the parent company of the website has decided it's time to shut the site down.
| | Search Marketing Benchmark Webinar Recording - The High Rankings / MarketingSherpa free webinar that was held last week was a huge success!
| How to Prevent Affiliates from Driving Up PPC Costs - Advanced Forum Thread of the Week - "Our client has affiliates that want to bid on many of the same keywords that we are bidding on. How can we manage this so that the affiliates don't drive up our cost on PPC?"
| | HRA Wrap-up 244 - Had an awesome time at PubCon last week catching up with many old friends. I found it pretty cool to hang out with some of the same folks I hung out with at my very first conference back in 2000!

Lots of free stuff being offered today; be sure to read all the way through. And for all of you social media phobes, be sure to read the main article. You may be surprised to learn that social media is really nothing to be afraid of.
| |
Scared of Social Media? You May Already Be a Pro! - I'll admit it. I used to be scared of social media. I didn't know what it was, nor did I want to. I'm rarely an early adopter of anything; in fact, some might call me a Luddite. (Yeah, I still use my 1994 HTML editor!) Let's just say that I resist change with every fiber of my being.

| Free SEMNE Passes - SEMNE (Search Engine Marketing New England) is offering High Rankings Advisor Newsletter subscribers 6 free passes to the November 18, 2008 networking event in Providence, RI featuring Nick Gerner from SEOmoz (one of the developers of the much talked about "Linkscape" project).
| | Google Indexing Robots.txt Files? - Advanced Forum Thread - In today's forum thread of the week, it was actually ME who had a question! I noticed that our robots.txt file had been indexed by Google and was curious if others had ever had this happen.
| HRA Wrap-up 243 - I'm looking forward to PubCon next week. I'm not much of a gambler, but Vegas is still cool to visit now and then. And catching up with old friends makes it all the better. If you're at the conference, please try to come up and say hi! I love meeting newsletter subscribers.

I've got a bunch of interesting SEO questions (and answers of course) for you today. Plus, be sure to take note of the 20% discount for WebmasterWorld's PubCon, which is coming up in just a few weeks.
| |
Pages Indexed, Descriptions and Title Tags - How important is it to have a large number of indexed sites through Google? If so, how do we increase the number, and how do we edit what text appears under the link?
| Keywords, Traffic and Link Popularity - I performed a keyword analysis for one of my projects, picked several powerful "traffic juicy" keywords and optimized the landing pages for those keywords. My site went to the first page in the search engines, and yet we've got no more than 100 unique visitors per month. Have you any idea why?
| | Stuff You Might Like: Free Webinar on Search Marketing Findings - I wanted to let you know about a free webinar that I'm doing with MarketingSherpa called "New Research Findings: Search Marketing Tips, Tactics and Trends."
| 1 Site Plus 4 Subdomains: Advanced SEO Forum Thread of the Week - Forum member "bobmeetin" explains how a business he's evaluating has a main website plus 4 subdomains and seems like one big organizational mess.
| | HRA Wrap-up 242 - I have a busy schedule over the next few weeks. Along with our typical client consulting, we have our October SEO training class on Friday, then next week is our SEO Lunch and Learn, and the week after that is PubCon in Vegas. I have to say, it will be nice talking SEO in person for awhile instead of just here, on the forum and on Twitter!

I've got a great guest article for you today from copy queen Karon Thackston. In fact, by the time you read this, I'll be spending time with Karon in person in NYC for the SMX East conference. I'm looking forward to catching up with her, as it's been ages since we were last together.

How Poor Usability Can Kill Your Copy and Conversions - It's funny how we, as website owners, don't always think like our visitors. A course of action that might seem perfectly obvious to us may stop our visitors right in the middle of their buying process. Take, for instance, e-commerce–type copy. Do you realize that what happens after your customers read your copy could make or break your sale? I'm not talking about shopping cart abandonment. I'm talking about good communication that keeps the buying cycle moving forward. Let me give you a real-world example.
| Stuff You Might Like: Jill's Latest SEO Columns - In case you missed them, my September columns for both Search Engine Land and TalentZoo are definitely worth a read (if I do say so myself!).
| | Affect of a Domain Name on Search Results - Advanced Forum Thread - Forum member "wassim" asks if a domain name affects the search results, and if so, how much effect does it have?
| HRA Wrap-up 241 - We've had a good response so far for our SEO Lunch & Learn on Nov. 7. There are still a few seats left, if you're interested in joining us. There's no charge and no catch!
